New South Wales.
Listing of Telegraph Offices to about 1900.

The list below summmarises the Telegraph Offices opened either as a Telegraph Office (TO) or as a Post and Telegraph Office (P&T) in NSW before about 1901. In the Legislative Assembly on 28 September 1861, Mr. Weekes, in answer to a question "admitted the desirability of conducting, under the same building, the business of the Telegraph Offices and of the Post Offices in the interior, and stated that arrangements to that effect would be made as soon as practicable". In February 1870, Parliament decided that Post Offices and Telegraph Offices were to be formally amalgamated in small towns.

There is no information on the site if an office is not on this list or is not hyperlinked.

A summary of the Offices opened in the first 10 years is provided in the Overview of N.S.W.

An interesting Letter to the Editor of the Yass Courier of 11 July 1868 canvasses a number of issues which apply equally to most of the Post and/or Telegraph Offices in the NSW Colony and to offices in the other Colonies. Perhaps the main omission is a note that, where offices were staffed full--time (and not part of the local store or the Public House or Court House - as many so-called Telegraph Offices were), the officers in charge were generally on duty or call 24 hours per day for 7 days a week. They were totally supportive, through their positions, of the commerce and personal interests of their local community and the development of their regions.
