Characteristics:

  • IMMEDIATE, in two square brackets, is in the lower left corner;

Has a 2d pale red rouletted stamp to pay delivery cost.

  • Crest has been embossed;
  • words are MAGNETIC TELEGRAPH OFFICE;
  • Lion is facing out;
  • both animals are thin and fit and both are standing very erect;
  • the shield is clear of the other decorations and supported only by the animals.

Used at Strathalbyn (possibly by Mr. Waddy) for sending a telegram received at Strathalbyn o 11 November 1861 to Miss Sarah Gray at Brighton - which at that time had no Telegraph Office.

On the front:

  • franked with a Perkins Bacon Rouletted 2d pale red tied by light but obvious Diamond Numeral '55' .
  • a very fine Mordan-type 'STRATHALBYN/=SOUTH-AUSTRALIA=' cds (rated R);
  • a similar date stamp for BRIGHTON of 12 November 1861.

The Strathalbyn Telegraph Office opened on 29 June 1860 while the Brighton Telgraph Office did not open until 26 September 1880.

In addition to the partial embossed seal for MAGNETIC TELEGRAPH OFFICE, the reverse side of the cover also has:

  • another Mordan-type 'BRIGHTON/ SOUTH-AUSTRALIA' cds to that on the front (rated RRRRR) of 11 November 1861 - LRD by almost 4 years.
  • a G.P.O./SOUTH AUSTRALIA cds of 11 November 1861.
