VC-DO-1A.

Melbourne (?) to Geelong on 31 January 1856.

Has accompanying delivery envelope (see below).

The earliest recorded delivery form and accompanying delivery envelope
in Australia’s telegraphic history.

It conveys a common message in the early days from a Harbour Master or an associate. The Message on the delivery form is addressed to the Master (Wilkinson - see "Inform W") reads:

"Inform W for the "Rosetta" Lighter will be alongside for wheat (?) this morning - your sails today".

The Rosetta appears to have arrived at Geelong from Constantinople and discharged cargo by lighter at Consignee's risk on 23 January 1856.
On 30 January, she was "cleared out" with 33 tons with sundries and ready to sail from Geelong to Melbourne.
She did sail on 31 January.

The Geelong line had opened in December 1854.
By the time this telegram was sent, there were only five stations open and 36 miles of line.
